About Stephen Eller,
M.A., LPC-I
Licensed Professional Counselor-Intern
Master’s in Community Counseling
Children, Adolescents,and Adults
I earned my Bachelor of Arts in Psychology and Christian Studies from the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor in 2007, and then went on to earn my Master of Arts in Community Counseling from the same school. During my time at UMHB, I was the graduate assistant for the Master’s Counseling program and worked at the University counseling center – first as an office manager, and then as a student counselor. As a student, I accumulated valuable counseling experience at Cedar Crest Hospital and Residential Treatment Center, where I worked with children aged 3 to 17 struggling with mental health issues or substance abuse.
I have worked with children, teenagers and adults as individuals, as couples, or in groups. I am a Licensed Professional Counselor Intern, which means that I have passed the National Counselor Examination and I am earning my post-graduate counseling hours under the supervision of Dan Kirkland. I am also working toward certification as a Registered Play Therapist. My approach to counseling tends to focus on two things that I consider very important: the power of relationship and the need to find a purpose in life. I will work with you as a fellow traveler: I cannot provide all the answers, and I cannot “fix” you or your child, but I can offer support and a non-judgmental perspective that may help you find a more positive direction. I encourage all of my clients to find a meaning for their life: a cause that draws them forward and makes their life about something bigger than themselves. My primary model for counseling is Logotherapy. This is an approach developed by Viktor Frankl, who lived through the concentration camps during World War II and went on to devote his life to helping others find meaning.
When working with children, I use Child-Centered Play Therapy. The idea behind this theory is that when a trained play therapist provides treats a child with positive regard and understanding in a non-judgmental environment, the child will be able to provide healing for him- or herself in the way that comes most naturally to children: through the language of play.
In my free time, I enjoy reading, writing fiction, and taking every opportunity to enjoy the outdoors. I cherish the time I get to spend with friends and family, especially my wife Bonnie and our cat, Gabby. I am always excited by the opportunity to engage new acquaintances in relationship and walk with them through their life story.
If Stephen can be of assistance to you – or your family – please contact him.
